Pietersen slams axing

Pietersen slams axing

08/31/2010 06:19:47 PM

Kevin Pietersen has been dropped from the England squad for the first time in his career, the England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed.

Pietersen has been axed from England's playing group for the forthcoming One-Day International and Twenty20 series against Pakistan following a lean run of form with the bat.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Craig Kieswetter, who was man of the match in England's World Twenty20 triumph over Australia in Barbados in May, has been dropped from the 50-over squad but retained for the shorter format.

However, duties behind the stumps in both forms of the game have been handed to Surrey's Steven Davies, who has received a call-up ahead of Test incumbent Matt Prior.

Paul Collingwood will captain the Twenty20 side, with Test captain Andrew Strauss to lead the 50-over team.

Pietersen could yet face disciplinary action for prematurely announcing his axing on Twitter hours before the squad was due to be named, condemning the decision in a profanity-laced message.

"Done for rest of summer!! Man of the World Cup T20 and dropped from the T20 side too. It's (sic) a f**k up!!" Pietersen wrote.

The 30-year-old hastily deleted the controversial message, releasing a more reasoned statement hours later.

"While I'm naturally disappointed to have been omitted from the England squad I fully understand the reasons why and will be doing everything I can to get back into the England team," the statement read.

"I have no issue with the selectors omitting me from the limited-overs squads and my sole focus now is working on my game ahead of an exciting winter."

Pietersen also announced his signing with county side Surrey, with the out-of-form batsman in dire need of preparation before England's upcoming Ashes campaign in Australia later this year.

"Kevin Pietersen has been omitted from both squads as we feel that his game would be best served by getting as much cricket under his belt as possible before a long and challenging winter," national selector Geoff Miller said.

"Kevin has proved on numerous occasions that he is a world class player and we know he'll benefit from getting more time in the middle to work on his batting and get his game back to the level he has shown throughout his career."

England's five-ODI series against Pakistan gets underway at Cardiff on Sunday.
