South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis has been forced from the ground during the second Test against Australia at Adelaide Oval with a suspected right hamstring injury.

Kallis pulled up while running in to bowl and could not complete his fourth over before he walked from the ground for treatment.

The loss of Kallis comes as a huge blow after the Proteas veteran snared two wickets in the opening session for figures of 2-19 from just 3.3 overs.

The 37-year-old dismissed Australian opener Ed Cowan for 10 before claiming the prized scalp of Ricky Ponting (four) after bowling the former Test captain with a brilliant delivery.

Kallis' departure heaps further pressure on South Africa's already depleted bowling attack after they lost paceman Vernon Philander just prior to the start of play with a back injury.

The aggressive Dave Warner and captain Michael Clarke are attempting to resurrect Australia's innings after a poor start.
