India to change it up

India to change it up

02/07/2012 05:49:47 AM

India will adopt a rotation policy for their top-order batsmen throughout the Commonwealth Bank Series, with Sachin Tendulkar among those to be rested.

Veteran opener Virender Sehwag sat out the opening game of the one-day international triangular series, which Australia won by 65 runs at the MCG, with Gautam Gambhir and Tendulkar opening the batting.

But that is unlikely to remain a constant throughout the month-long series, with India keen to rest key players at the back end of a long tour which has seen them play four Tests and two T20 internationals.

Sehwag, who has endured a lean tour of Australia, said he was confident the rotation policy would give him the chance to play against Sri Lanka at the WACA Ground on Wednesday, while Tendulkar may have his quest to record his 100th international century put temporarily on hold.

"They will decide [Wednesday] because we are giving breaks to the top three batsmen," Sehwag, who smashed an incredible 219 off 149 balls in his last ODI against the West Indies in December, said.

"So I think maybe tomorrow is someone else's turn, so either Gautum or Tendulkar will take a break, and then maybe I can play."

"When you're playing continuously with four Test matches then two T20s then one-dayers the body is fatigued and the mental break also is good for a player."

"That's why we decided the top three would always rotate and we can give breaks to Tendulkar, Gambhir or Sehwag and then all the extras can play because they've just arrived here."

Sehwag isn't the only Indian player to have struggled in Australia, after the team suffered a 4-0 whitewash in the Tests, but the 33-year-old insists confidence within the camp isn't an issue.

"One-dayers are a totally different ball game. Any team can beat anybody else," he said.

"We had a very good net session today and we are confident that tomorrow we will come and play good cricket. We are feeling good."

Meanwhile, Sehwag said the visitors were keeping Yuvraj Singh in their thoughts after the star batsman's recent cancer diagnosis.

"I heard that he's taking chemotherapy but I'm hoping he'll be fine and he'll come back soon," he said.

"We're all praying for Yuvraj and hoping that he'll come back soon and can come out of whatever problems he's having and come back to playing as soon as possible."
