Hussey slays Bulls

Hussey slays Bulls

03/20/2010 01:48:12 AM

David Hussey's century was the highlight of a dominant morning session for the Bushrangers who've extended their lead over Queensland to 444 in the Sheffield Shield final at the MCG.

At lunch on day four, Victoria was 3-396 in its second innings with Hussey unbeaten on 126 and skipper Cameron White 47.

Aaron Finch was the only batsman to fall in the session, run out for 63 by a direct hit from 12th man Jason Floros, deputising for the injured James Hopes.

With a century there for the taking, Finch, who was 54 overnight, will be cursing his impetuousness for taking on the substitute's arm for the sake of a single.

Bulls skipper Chris Simpson opened with spin from both ends when the Vics resumed at 2-273 and Hussey immediately took a fancy to the left-arm orthodox darts of part-timer Chris Lynn.

The Bushrangers veteran - who made 113 in last year's final - smashed two sixes off Lynn and one off Cameron Boyce in the first 20 minutes of play to advance at run-a-ball pace from his overnight score of 63 to his century from just 110 deliveries.

Hussey toned it down after being given a life on 111 when dropped by Wade Townsend at cover off Luke Feldman, leaving it to White to take the initiative in the run up to lunch.

Victoria's second innings got away to a dynamite start on Friday with an opening stand of 154 between Nick Jewell and Rob Quiney.

After rolling the Bulls for 257 earlier in the day, the Bushrangers were keen to capitalise on a 48-run first-innings lead.

Both teams suffered injury setbacks on day three - Bushrangers trump Damien Wright pulled a hamstring, while a torn calf muscle has prevented Bulls all-rounder Hopes from bowling in Victoria's second innings.
