Hodge eyes another record

02/09/2010 08:51:11 AM

Brad Hodge's first-class cricket career may be over but the veteran Victorian batsman is set to create history at the MCG on Wednesday night in the 50-over game.

The 35-year-old, who retired from Sheffield Shield cricket earlier this season but continues to play limited-overs and Twenty20 matches, goes into Wednesday night's crunch Ford Ranger Cup clash against New South Wales needing to score just 21 runs to surpass former Queensland batsman Jimmy Maher's record of 4589 runs in Australia's domestic 50-over competition.

Hodge has already been the leading run scorer in this year's competition with 467 runs at an average of 66.71 - including three centuries - and another big innings from the veteran on Wednesday night would go a long way towards keeping Victoria on track in its quest to win all three domestic competitions this summer.

The Vics have already won their fourth Twenty20 domestic title in the past five seasons this year while they currently sit top of the Sheffield Shield table.

And in the Ford Ranger Cup the Bushrangers find themselves in equal third place alongside New South Wales and South Australia and just a point behind by second-placed Western Australia.

But a win for either Victoria or New South Wales on Wednesday night will see them join Queensland at the top of the table while a bonus-point win for either side would see them move to outright first.

Only last season the Bushrangers made all three domestic finals and while they lost both the Ford Ranger Cup and Twenty20 finals, they did win the Sheffield Shield.

Victorian coach Greg Shipperd has made no secret of his desire to try to win all three trophies this season and admits that is unlikely to happen unless the Vics down the Blues in their Ford Ranger Cup clash.

"It is still alive," Shipperd said of the Vics' goal of winning all three trophies.

"But we don't talk about it a hell of a lot."

"It's one competition at a time and one days cricket at a time but yet we have only got two games to go in this form of the game and we are coming off a good win down in Tasmania so we are fairly buoyant about our chances."

Shipperd said he would also dearly love to see Hodge break Maher's run-scoring record in domestic 50 overs matches in front of his home crowd.

"We would love him to break that record tomorrow night and again play a significant innings," he said.

"He has played three significant innings for us this season scoring three hundreds and that is an outstanding season by any stretch of the imagination so I'm sure he will be pretty relaxed while also wanting the rest of our troops to continue their good form."

While the Vics will be without skipper Cameron White and spearhead Clint McKay due to national commitments, the Blues will be boosted by the return of hard-hitting opener David Warner and exciting young leg-spinning all-rounder Steven Smith - who both starred in Australia's recent Twenty20 win over Pakistan at the MCG.

Play starts at 2.15pm.
