England axe Bell

Bell axed from ODI squad

02/07/2012 10:21:26 AM

Struggling batsman Ian Bell has been dropped from England's one-day and Twenty20 squads for the limited-overs series against Pakistan.

Bell was one of several English batsmen to falter in difficult Asian conditions during the 3-0 Test series whitewash against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.

The 29-year-old managed a meagre average of 8.5 runs per innings and posted a top score of 29 during the series, which concluded with a 79-run defeat in Dubai on Monday.

England have included Tim Bresnan in both squads, though he will have to prove his fitness after an elbow injury ruled him out the Test series.

Two fresh faces were also named by selectors, with left-arm spinner Danny Briggs making both squads, while batsman Jos Buttler was named in the 16-man one-day squad.

"We have selected two squads that include both experienced international players and younger players who have performed strongly for England Lions in recent months and deserve an opportunity to further test themselves against quality opposition," England selector Geoff Miller said.

"Playing against Pakistan in the UAE will be challenging but it is important that these players continue to develop their skills so that we are able to make strides in limited-overs cricket, particularly on the subcontinent."

England will play four one-day internationals and three T20 matches against Pakistan throughout February.
