Bulls out for revenge

Bulls out for revenge

02/10/2012 08:20:53 AM

Debutant captain Ryan Broad will have the chance to pilot Queensland towards a Ryobi Cup final berth, when he leads the Bulls against Western Australia at the Gabba on Saturday night.

The Bupa Sheffield Shield clash between the sides in the preceding week was an absolute classic, coming down to Warriors No.11 Michael Hogan to secure the outright win, after Alister McDermott tore through the top-order with figures of 7-24.

It was Queensland's first loss in seven starts in the red-ball format and they'll be determined to extract some vengeance on Marcus North's men.

And while the Warriors have been abysmal in the Ryobi Cup, with no wins and six losses to show for their efforts, the Bulls will be desperate for the points to keep pace with their two finals rivals, South Australia and Tasmania.

Broad takes the reigns with option one, James Hopes, still unavailable with a knee complaint, and option two, Peter Forrest, absent through his duties with the national ODI squad.

"It's an honour and a privilege to do the job," said Broad.

"It will mean a few adjustments but I expect it to be a strictly short-term role rather than one I will be doing for a while."

"The best thing to do will be to enjoy the experience."

Allrounder Michael Neser will miss the game after being ruled out for a minimum of four weeks with an ankle strain that he suffered while bowling during the Bupa Sheffield Shield match on Wednesday.

Western Australia will be without young star Mitchell Marsh, who moves into the one-day squad, but still pack a powerful side, headlined by North, Shaun Marsh and fast-scoring talents Liam Davis and Travis Birt.

21-year-old Tim Davis will make his WA 50-over debut, bringing a strong junior pedigree, highlighted by a strong contribution in Australia's 2010 Under 19 World Cup victory.

Armstrong's elevation to the side comes as vindication for a cross-country move from New South Wales, where as a rookie squad member he played in one KFC Big Bash match last season.

Queensland: Ryan Broad (c), Joe Burns, Ben Cutting, Ben Dunk, Cameron Gannon, Brad Ipson, Chris Lynn, Alister McDermott, Steve Paulsen, Nathan Reardon, Andrew Robinson, Chris Swan (12th man to be named)

Western Australia: Marcus North (c), Tim Armstrong, Michael Beer, Jason Behrendorff, Travis Birt, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Liam Davis, Ryan Duffield, Shaun Marsh, Nathan Rimmington, Luke Ronchi, Adam Voges. (12th man to be named)
