Bailey's debut delight

Bailey's debut delight

Debutant Australian Twenty20 captain George Bailey was delighted with his team's performance in their 31-run win over India in Sydney on Wednesday.

After losing the toss and being sent into bat, the Australians smashed 4-171 from their 20 overs, with rookie wicketkeeper Matthew Wade's 72 off 43 balls making the difference.

In reply the Indians lost four quick wickets to begin their run chase, and despite a late fight back from skipper MS Dhoni, they could manage only 6-140.

Bailey, who was making his debut with the captain's armband, was pleased with his side.

"I thought Matty's (Wade) batting was outstanding, to have someone who the rest of the team can bat around and have that platform makes it very easy. To have someone keeping wickets in hand for Huss (David Hussey) to hit out late in the innings was important," Bailey said after the win at Stadium Australia.

"I thought our team effort with the bat and the ball, all our bowlers, was really good and it was a great energy. It's hard to tell when you're on the field but my general feeling was there was great energy from our fielding group as well."

Bailey struggled to score heavily after coming in at No.5, making 12 not out off 11 balls, and the 29-year-old said he had trouble finding the boundary.

"It would've been nice to get hold of a couple, but I thought it was really tough to get hold of a couple at the end," Bailey said.

"Batting with Dave Hussey, who I've spent quite a lot of time batting with, he's one of the cleanest strikers in the world and he was struggling as well. It's nice to know we've got that depth behind us, (but) it wasn't through lack of trying that we were getting singles."

Hussey scored 42 off 30 balls, but it was his bowling later on that really swung the match in Australia's favour.

The 34-year-old shattered the stumps of Rohit Sharma with a beautiful delivery and dismissed opener Gautum Gambhir for 20, drawing praise from Bailey.

"As an all-round cricketer in the shorter format, he's outstanding, and you can add his fielding to that as well," Bailey said.

"One of the great things about our Twenty20 team - and he sums that up beautifully - is consistency, and that's a really hard thing to get in Twenty20."
