Australian Team Profile

The two-wheel gold rush enjoyed by Australian cyclists in Athens has more medals on the mind for our strong team.

Australia has a long and proud tradition in Olympic cycling. In terms of medals won per events contested the sport is one of the most successful.

In 2004, Australia won a record six gold medals. Ryan Bayley, the 'KFC Kid', is back for another crack at glory. His fast-food fuelled rides in Athens made him the first Australian to win two individual cycling gold medals at the same Olympics.

Other gold medals were won by Anna Meares with a world record time in the 500m time trial, Sara Carrigan in the women's road race, the all-conquering team pursuit squad and Graeme Brown with the versatile Stuart O'Grady in the Madison.

Australian track cycling veteran Shane Kelly is set for his fifth Olympics after winning a ride-off in Melbourne against Ben Kersten.

Kelly, 36, and O'Grady are set to become the first Australian cyclists to compete at five Games.

Cycling events have been present at every staging of the Modern Olympics since Athens in 1896.

Women's cycling was introduced in Los Angeles in 1984, mountain biking made its Olympic debut at Atlanta 1996 and BMX makes its first appearance in Beijing.

The track, mountain bike and BMX events will all be held at Laoshan in Beijing's west.
