Australian Team Profile

Australia's hard-as-nails boxers are out to break a 20-year medal drought in Beijing.

The first of Australia's five boxing medals - two silver and three bronze - dates back to 1908. The last came in 1988. Today's team is committed to adding to the haul.

Australia's first Olympic boxer was the famous sporting all-rounder Reginald 'Snowy' Baker, who was downed in the final of the middleweight division at the London Games by Johnny Douglas.

The next medal came 48 years later in Melbourne when Kevin Hogarth scored bronze in the welterweight division.

Tony Madigan and Ollie Taylor headed the boxing team in Rome in 1960 and both won bronze medals in the light heavyweight and bantamweight categories respectively.

Madigan lost his semi-final to a fighter known as Cassius Clay. Clay went on to be arguably the greatest boxer in history, and is more famously known these days as Muhammad Ali.

Grahame 'Spike' Cheney took silver as a light welterweight in 1988, the last time an Australian boxer was in the first three at the Olympics.

Those readying to step into the ring in Beijing are confident of success, despite the barren run.

Captain Gerard O'Mahony, 29, will lead the nine-man team selected for 2008.

O'Mahony represented Australia in 2004 at the Athens Olympic Games and hopes to be part of a return to the podium in Beijing.

He and team-mate Anthony Little are the only two boxers with Olympic experience but the skipper is not concerned.

"We are taking a much more experienced team compared to the last Games. These guys have been to European Championships, Commonwealth Games and even World Championships, and that experience is going to show," O'Mahony said.

At just 17, Stephen Sutherland will make his Olympic debut as the youngest on the team, competing in the 51kg division.

The 11 boxing events will be contested at the Workers' Indoor Stadium in Beijing's Chaoyang District.
