Australian Team Profile

Australia has a speedy six ready for the world's fastest racquet sport.

Badminton was introduced as an Olympic sport at the Barcelona Games in 1992 with both men's and women's singles and doubles played.

In 1996, at Atlanta, a mixed doubles event was included. This is the only mixed doubles event in all of the Olympic sports.

Each of Australia's six-person team to play at Peking University Gymnasium hails from Victoria.

The five events will be single-elimination tournaments with the top-eight players or pairs seeded.

Australia has qualified in men's and women's singles and doubles.

Erin Carroll was the sixth Australian to qualify for the team.

The 21-year-old will compete in the ladies singles and joins Tania Luiz, Eugenia Tanaka, Ross Smith, Glenn Warfe and Stuart Gomez.

Australia has not yet won a medal in the sport, which has been dominated by Asia since it debuted at the Olympics.

Of the 19 gold medals awarded, China has won eight, Indonesia and Korea five each and Denmark one.
