Australian Team Profile

Australian shooters will head to Beijing confident of adding to the 13 medals already achieved in the different disciplines. Australia has at least one competitor in each of the 15 events.

Headlining the men is two-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Diamond, who will be competing in his fifth Olympic Games. Diamond won the trap events in Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, but couldn't make it a hat-trick, finishing eighth in Athens.

Taking time off after Athens in 2004, Diamond returned with a bang in 2007 winning gold in the trap at the World Championships in Nicosia, Cyprus. A proven big-stage performer, Diamond will definitely go in as one of the favourites to take gold in the trap event.

Of the other men competing, Warren Potent is Australia's next best chance to medal in the 50m rifle event. The 46-year-old will be competing in his third Olympics and while his previous results - 42nd in Athens and 19th in Sydney - aren't that great, he is currently in blistering form.

Since winning his first World Cup event in Sydney in 2007, Potent has gone on to claim a further two more including one in Beijing earlier this year. In 2007, Potent achieved a score of 595 or better (600 is the maximum) in 12 out of 13 events.

Australia's best female hope for a medal is Lalita Yauhleuskaya. The 44-year-old will be competing in her third Olympics having already won a bronze in Sydney 2000, when she competed for Belarus.

Yauhleuskaya will compete in both the 10m air pistol and the 25m pistol events and will be aiming to better her 21st and 10th place finishes in Athens.

Natalia Rahman, Stacy Roiall and Robyn Van Nus will all be making their Olympic Games debut, while Sue McCready will be making her third appearance at the Games.

The Beijing Shooting Range and Hall are next to each other in the Shijingshan District and events are to be held from August 9 to 16.

Australia has enjoyed recent success in the sport, with Suzanne Balogh grabbing gold and Adam Vella snaring a bronze in Athens 2004.
