A couple of years ago, Jimmer Fredette’s Brigham Young men's basketball scoring record looked to be safe for a long time.

Turns out, it didn’t last long.

Tyler Haws surpassed Fredette on Thursday night in BYU’s 82-69 win over Portland. The 6-5 senior scored 21 points and now has 2,614 for his career. He eclipsed Fredette's previous mark of 2,599 with a basket early in the first half.

"I am glad I got it over with quickly," he said, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. "I got over the hump quick and was able to focus on just winning the game. To break a record like that, it is a pretty special thing, and I owe all the credit to my coaches and my teammates."

Haws is averaging 22.4 points this season.

Fredette, who currently plays for the Pelicans, played at BYU from 2007-11.
