The Orlando Magic have named Scott Skiles as the 12th head coach in their franchise history, general manager Rob Hennigan announced on Friday.

Orlando fired Jacque Vaughn after nearly three seasons as head coach in February, as the Magic finished their campaign with a 25-57 record under interim coach James Borrego.

Skiles subsequently emerged as favourite for the permanent post last weekend and reports suggested the Magic were working towards a deal throughout the week.

Commenting on the appointment, Hennigan said: "Scott clearly distinguished himself as a tremendous fit. Our young roster will benefit greatly from Scott's extensive head coaching experience and commitment to teaching smart, physical, unselfish basketball.

"We believe in Scott's ability to establish a culture of winning habits and accountability that will help guide our team in a positive direction."

Skiles had stints with the Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic, and the Philadelphia 76ers during his 11-year NBA playing career, while also representing PAOK of Greece in 1996.

He returned to the NBA the following year to take on the role as head coach for the Suns, Bulls and most recently the Bucks.

"As we began our search, our internal discussions centred on finding a head coach with a solid resume of NBA head coaching experience, great leadership qualities, a motivating communication style, and someone with a strong strategic acumen," Magic CEO Alex Martins said.

"We feel Scott brings a balanced approach in all those qualities and we look forward, with great confidence, to him leading our young men in helping us reach our collective goal of sustainable success."

Skiles, 51, has a career record of 443-433 in the regular season and 18-24 in the play-offs. He reached the conference semi-finals once in both Phoenix and Chicago.
