St. John’s guard Rysheed Jordan, who averaged 14.1 points per game as a sophomore in 2014-15, is expected to be ruled academically ineligible for the fall semester, and it’s possible he may not play again for the Red Storm, the New York Daily News reported, citing two unidentified sources.

Jordan's departure is not a done deal, one of the sources told the Daily News.

He has been told what he must do during the university's summer session and fall semester to regain his eligibility to play from mid-December through March. New coach Chris Mullin is expected to meet with Jordan in the coming week, and Jordan's decision to stay or go could be made soon thereafter.

In addition to being the team's second leading scorer last season, Jordan also averaged 3.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

When former coach Steve Lavin and St. John's agreed to part ways after the Red Storm's first NCAA Tournament berth in four years, some wondered whether Jordan would return.

In April, Mullin said Jordan was working out with the team and sounded excited to work with Jordan. “As far as talent, he’s really gifted,” Mullin said. “I think I can really help him develop.”

Playing in the background: The Red Storm last week landed highly coveted point guard Marcus LoVett, a four-star recruit from Morgan Park High School in Chicago. According to the Red Storm's announcement Friday that LoVett had signed a national letter of intent, he averaged “approximately 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists” this season. If Jordan is academically ineligible for the fall, LoVett could be the starter when the season opens.

A Daily News source close to LoVett said “he liked the idea he might start right away.”
