Sacramento Kings general manager Pete D'Alessandro reportedly is the leading candidate to take over as athletic director at St. John's.
Red Storm AD Chris Monasch announced his resignation Thursday, effective June 30, after a decade on the job at his alma mater. But even before that news became official, Yahoo Sports and others reported fellow alum D'Alessandro was the favorite to step in.
D'Alessandro, who turns 47 next month, has seen his role in Sacramento diminished with the recent addition of Vlade Divac to the front office. If he does end up in New York, he would be the second person to leave the Kings for the Red Storm in recent months; former Sacramento adviser Chris Mullin took over the basketball program at his alma mater in March.
Monasch, who hired Mullin to replace Steve Lavin as basketball coach, had been at the helm at St. John's since 2005.
"I am most proud of the many achievements of our student-athletes over the last ten years," Monasch said in a release. "They have embodied what student-athletes should strive for in their respective sport, in the classroom and serving the community. I want to thank all of the coaches, administrators and staff for the support they gave to assist our student-athletes in achieving so much over the last decade."
