After making headlines earlier this season for upsetting then-No.17 Michigan in Ann Arbor, the NJIT Highlanders have been rewarded with their first postseason invitation since moving up to Division I in 2009.

According to USA Today, the Highlanders (17-11) have accepted an invitation to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament and will host an opening-round game, likely on March 16.

The team is not affiliated with any conference and competes as an independent.

"We think it's a really neat story," said Jamie Kachmarik, the CIT selection committee chairman. "From a program that didn't win a game seven years ago to where they are now, Coach (Jim) Engles has really changed that whole program and built it."

The 32-team CIT field is made up of non-BCS programs not selected to participate in the NCAA or NIT. All 31 games are played on campus sites.

The Highlanders, who have won 12 of their last 14 games, are led by sophomore guard Damon Lynn who is averaging 17.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists. As a team, NJIT ranks 36th in the nation with 15.1 assists per game.
