Mike Conley Jr starred on his return to action as the Memphis Grizzlies levelled their Western Conference semi-final series with the Golden State Warriors.

Conley scored 22 points for the Grizzlies in California, as Memphis defeated the Warriors 97-90 in game two, with the point guard adding a big three in the fourth quarter to keep the distance between the teams.

The 27-year-old broke several bones in his face in the Grizzlies' game three against the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the play-offs, and returned to action on Tuesday with a protective face mask.

Conley came out on fire, hitting his first four shots for nine first-quarter points, in his head-to-head battle with MVP Steph Curry.

For the game, Conley sank eight of 12 field-goal attempts and turned the ball over just once, although his comeback underwent a brief setback in the second quarter as he was hit in the eye by Golden State's Draymond Green.

He also battled leg cramps in the fourth quarter.

Memphis started strongly, outscoring the Warriors 28-22 in the opening term and extending their lead to 11 points by half-time.

Zach Randolph (20 points) also impressed for the visitors, while Green (14 points, 12 rebounds) notched a double-double for the Warriors.

Curry finished with 19 points, shooting seven-for-19 from the field and missing nine of 11 three-point attempts.

In the Eastern Conference, the Atlanta Hawks bounced back from a loss at home on Sunday to defeat the Washington Wizards 106-90 and level their semi-final series at 1-1.

Paul Millsap (18 points, 11 rebounds) and DeMarre Carroll (22 points) led the way for the Hawks in Atlanta, while Ramon Sessions (21) top-scored for the visitors.

Washington's John Wall missed the match with a sprained wrist and with a three-day break before game three, the Wizards hope the point guard will be fit for back-to-back home games.
