The pre-season period is also vital for support teams, such as coaches, trainers and of course, cheerleaders.

The Miami Heat held their annual open auditions for its all-female dance squad at the beginning of August, and it was a roaring success despite one highly unusual addition to the try-outs.

There was a great number of ladies that turned up, and so did this man, Keith Wilson.

This isn’t the first time Wilson has tried out for the all-female dance squad, after he was knocked back in 2012.

Speaking to Buzzfeed.com, Wilson said that as soon as he heard Beyonce’s “Run the World (Girls)” play during the freestyle round, he knew he was lighting up the court.

“It was very simple and easy for me to catch the beat, catch the move, and just milk it for what it was,” Wilson said.

When speaking about his high leg-kicks and the overwhelming support he was receiving during the trials, Wilson responded: “A lot of (the girls) didn’t know I could do that.”

Although he may have been cut prematurely, Wilson did make it through to the third round of auditions and cited his genetics as the main reason he didn’t get picked.

Wilson was one of the standout performers but didn’t make the next trial stage because he did not fit the criteria of being a woman.

“I do believe it was because of my gender, and that the Heat is not ready for a guy right now,” Wilson said.

“In due time they’ll be open to it though.”

Here's hoping Wilson is at the trials again in 2016.
