Ed Davis opts out of Lakers contract for NBA free agency

There has been plenty of talk about who will be adding to the Lakers roster, but not a lot of talk about who will be leaving.

Lakers big man Ed Davis will at least explore his options, deciding to opt out of the second year of his deal, the team announced. This decision was obvious because Davis was on a minimum contract and far outplayed that value.

Davis averaged 8.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks for the Lakers last season. The former North Carolina star shot 60.1 percent from the field in his lone season with the Lakers. A first-round of the Raptors in 2010, Davis has also played for the Grizzlies. He's averaged 7.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and a block per game in six NBA seasons.

The Lakers have reportedly been pursuing Kings center DeMarcus Cousins and are expected to make a run at free agent LaMarcus Aldridge as well after spending the second overall pick in the NBA Draft on guard D’Angelo Russell.
