LeBron inspires Cavs, Hawks win again

LeBronJames - Cropped

A LeBron James-inspired surge saw the Cleveland Cavaliers hand the Oklahoma City Thunder back-to-back defeats in the NBA on Sunday, as the Atlanta Hawks continued their record-breaking run.

The Cavaliers were 108-98 winners over the Thunder.

Up five points with a quarter to play, the Cavs started the final term in brutal fashion with James leading the way.

James scored Cleveland's first eight points of the quarter, including two three-pointers, as the Cavs went on an 11-4 run to effectively end the contest.

While Kevin Durant (32 points) battled gamely for the visiting Thunder, James (34) was the main man in Cleveland as the Cavs' mid-season revival continued.

Earlier this month, Cleveland were being slammed as a serious disappointment as they went on a six-game losing streak, which was also part of a run of 10 defeats in 12 matches that started on Christmas Day at James' old home in Miami.

But their win on Sunday saw the Cavaliers move within 3.5 games of the fourth-placed Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference.

The Bulls lost 96-84 to the Miami Heat.

Kevin Love (19 points, 13 rebounds) and Tristan Thompson (10, 16) both registered double-doubles for Cleveland, while Kyrie Irving sank 21 points.

In Atlanta, the Hawks stretched their franchise-record streak to 16 victories, cruising past the Minnesota Timberwolves 112-100.

The home side blew the game open with a 36-23 second quarter.

Paul Millsap top-scored for Atlanta with 20 points, while Al Horford (19) and Jeff Teague (15) were also handy contributors as six Hawks reached double figures.

The Hawks (37-8 win-loss record) lead the East's standings by seven games from the Washington Wizards (30-15), with the Toronto Raptors (29-15) and Chicago (29-17) wrapping up the top four.

Washington needed overtime to edge out the Denver Nuggets 117-115, while the Raptors defeated the Detroit Pistons 114-110 in another tight encounter.

In the Western Conference, leaders the Golden State Warriors had Klay Thompson to thank for their 114-111 win over the Boston Celtics.

Thompson scored the Warriors' last seven points, including two free-throws with three seconds remaining, as Golden State registered a fifth consecutive victory.

The Warriors' shooting guard ended with 31 points, while Stephen Curry (22 points, 11 assists) and Andrew Bogut (13 points, 13 rebounds) both produced double-doubles for the home side, and Jared Sullinger top-scored with 26 for the visiting Celtics.

The Houston Rockets defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 99-87, the Los Angeles Clippers had few problems accounting for the Phoenix Suns 120-100 and the San Antonio Spurs trumped the Milwaukee Bucks 101-95.

The New Orleans Pelicans edged out the Dallas Mavericks 109-106 and the Indiana Pacers defeated the Orlando Magic 106-99.
