Djordjevic's men ensured themselves of a medal when they downed France 90-85 in the semi-finals, but had to settle for silver when the all-star Americans cruised to a 129-92 win in the Madrid final.

Serbia were somewhat surprise finalists, only sneaking into the knockout phase after finishing fourth in Group A - but big wins over Greece and Brazil saw them continue their run with an upset over the French.

And despite a predictable humbling in the final to Team USA, Djordjevic had nothing but glowing praise for his side.

"I'm so proud of my players. I'm so happy for them, I'm so honoured to be their coach for these two months and I want to publicly thank them for their effort, their professionalism, their heart - they played with all their heart for our country and they made it happen," Djordjevic said.

"They are the ones who deserve all the credit and they're the ones who created this chemistry, created this team and I'm really happy person that I was on the side of those players.

"I learned a lot from them, and I tried to put my little part to help to achieve this silver medal in the World Cup which for us is as big as gold."

Djordjevic said his team - led by Nemanja Bjelica and Nikola Kalinic (both 18 points) - were still shattered to fall short of a dream title win.

"No-one expected us I think. We were just growing up, growing up from day one until now," he said.

"Maybe the result here, we were all disappointed because players are competitors, we all are competitors.

"But we have to congratulate the USA team. They were the best in this competition and they deserve this gold.

"They really kicked our butt tonight."
