The French bounced back from a shattering semi-final loss to Serbia with a 95-93 victory over Lithuania in the bronze-medal play-off in Madrid.
Collet said it had long been their aim to get on the podium in Spain, however he was already re-setting his sights on the next two major tournaments - the European championships and the Olympic Games in Brazil.
"When we started this adventure in July we had the goal of finishing in the top three," Collet said.
"I am very happy with this young group getting a very good result. We have EuroBasket next year in France and our next goal is to go to Rio in two years.
"This is the main goal of this team because we would like to be in the same place in Rio 2016."
France will host part of the group stages and also the knockout rounds of EuroBasket 2015.
Collet said he was aware of the history going against hosts of the continental tournament.
"We know that it's very difficult to win a championship at home, like we saw with Spain," he said.
"Spain were the closest in 2007 until JR Holden hit his jumper ... our goal will be to be the first [hosts to win] for a long time."
Power forward Boris Diaw said the team were still rueing their semi-final defeat, despite ending the tournament on a winning note.
"That's something all the players, the younger players can use as experience," Diaw said.
"I don't think that they had this kind of loss before. That's something that stays in your head and I think it will serve us in the future."
Lithuania centre Jonas Valanciunas said his side lacked a class finisher, as they failed to match their bronze-medal performance from 2010.
"We missed something - a couple of key shots, lost by couple of points and didn't do everything that we needed to do," Valanciunas said.
