The Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics joined the Miami Heat on 34 wins, as the race for NBA play-off spots continued in earnest on Wednesday.

The Heat (seventh, 34-40) remain above the Nets (34-40) and the Celtics (34-41), but the latter two did what they had to - win - to preserve their push for a spot inside the Eastern Conference's top eight.

The Nets' fifth straight victory saw them edge the New York Knicks 100-98, with Brook Lopez's late tip-in sparing Brooklyn's blushes against the conference cellar-dwellers.

Brooklyn had led by 16 points during the second half, but needed the intervention from Lopez (18), who was topped only by Deron Williams (26) in his side's scoring.

The Nets remain in eighth spot in the East, despite the Celtics going back-to-back with a 100-87 triumph over the Indiana Pacers.

Kelly Olynyk was accidentally elbowed in the eye by team-mate Shavlik Randolph in pre-match, but - donning a bruise and four stitches, he scored an equal team-high 19 points for the victorious Celtics.

Boston (ninth) are half-a-game outside the top eight, while the Charlotte Hornets (32-42) and Indiana (32-43) also still harbour hopes of making the play-offs.

A Russell Westbrook triple-double could not spare the Oklahoma City Thunder from defeat, with the Dallas Mavericks pipping them 135-131.

Westbrook (31 points, 11 assists, 11 rebounds) was one of three Thunder players to shoot 30-plus, including Anthony Morrow (32) and Enes Kanter (30).

But Oklahoma City (42-33) were unable to strengthen their hold on eighth spot in the Western Conference, while the Mavs (46-29) consolidated seventh.

The New Orleans Pelicans (40-34), meanwhile, made it three straight wins to pile the pressure on the Thunder, accounting for the Los Angeles Lakers 113-92.

James Harden drained eight-of-nine three-point attempts on his way to a career-high 51-point haul, helping his Houston Rockets down the Sacramento Kings 115-111.

Charlotte cruised to a 102-78 thrashing of the Detroit Pistons, while champions the San Antonio Spurs were too good for the Orlando Magic 103-91.

The Washington Wizards trumped the Philadelphia 76ers 106-93, while the Milwaukee Bucks moved closer to sealing the East's sixth seeding with a 95-91 win over the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Clippers held off the Portland Trail Blazers 126-122.

The Toronto Raptors had seven players shoot 10-plus points in their 113-99 win over West cellar-dwellers the Minnesota Timberwolves, while the Utah Jazz made it three straight wins - downing fellow eliminated outfit the Denver Nuggets 98-84.
