Australia can beat anyone, says Ingles

In a shock result on day four of the FIBA World Cup, Australia set up a potential runner-up finish in Group D after upstaging world number four side Lithuania in Gran Canaria.

Ingles, who is trying to play his way into the NBA following a stint in Israel last season, led with a team-high 18 points, four assists and three steals as Australia improved to a 2-1 record after handing Lithuania their first loss of the tournament.

Speaking to FIBA's official website post-game, a buoyant Ingles said Australia are a match for the world's best if they can reproduce Tuesday's display.

"They're a great team and I think the best thing about tonight was we stuck with our game plan and did what we wanted to do," said reported Philadelphia 76ers target Ingles.

"At the end of the day that's what it came down to.

"Today shows when we do it for 40 minutes we can really beat any team out here."

Known for their dominant third quarters, having outscored opponents 47-26 in the first two games in Spain, it was imperative that Australia started on the front foot against Lithuania.

And the Australians did, racing out to a 47-27 lead at half-time on the back of a 30-point opening quarter, though Lithuania rallied in the third period to reduce the deficit to six.

But Australia's disruptive style worked effectively, forcing Lithuania into 22 turnovers as they held on for back-to-back wins.

"We knew they were going to make a run in the second half at some point, and for the guys to stick together and play our style and hold it together [was great].

"They're a great team, they were going to do something at some point, and I think in the past that's where we've lost games, we can't hold that lead and control the run, and I think we did a great job of that tonight."

Australia's two remaining group games are against Mexico (1-2) and Angola (1-2).
