Rickert, Blaze part ways

Rickert, Blaze part ways

The Gold Coast Blaze are searching for a second import after American Rick Rickert's application for New Zealand residency was unsuccessful.

The Blaze announced in April that they intended to sign Rickert as a local player, pending his citizenship application.

The news is also a blow for the Tall Blacks ahead of the basketball world championships in Turkey next month.

Rickert's unavailability for New Zealand comes hot on the heels of that of 21-year-old Corey Webster, who was suspended for two months by the Sports Tribunal for cannabis use.

Blaze coach Joey Wright was disappointed at not being able to sign Rickert.

"Rick is a great guy and an excellent player, one who is definitely good enough to play as an import in our league," he said.

"Unfortunately, we have already signed Bennett Davison as a big man and we need to use our other import slot to find a guard or small forward. This is especially true now that Jason Cadee is unavailable for a good part of the season."

The Blaze now are looking to fill a new spot on their roster and Wright and CEO Dave Claxton will be scouring the market looking for someone who can make an impact at both ends of the floor.

Rickert played last season for the New Zealand Breakers where he averaged 12 points and seven rebounds per game.

He played briefly with the Detroit Pistons and has played in several European leagues.
