Paul seeks trade from Hornets

NBA point guard Chris Paul will ask to be traded from the New Orleans Hornets, according to reports from the US.

The three-time NBA All-Star and 2008 Olympic gold medallist will meet with Hornets' management on Monday and is expected to request a trade.

According to several media organisations, Paul will present Hornets president Hugh Weber, coach Monty Williams and general manager Dell Demps with a list of teams he would be happy to play for.

At the top of the list is the New York Knicks, followed by the Orlando Magic, the Dallas Mavericks and the Portland Trail Blazers.

In his ideal scenario, Paul and the Denver Nuggets' Carmelo Anthony would join Amare Stoudemire in New York, forming a big three to rival the Miami Heat's new super-trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

James, one of Paul's closest friends, recently departed the Cleveland Cavaliers to seek a championship ring with the Heat, much to Cleveland's dismay.

The superstar, considered one of the best active players in the NBA, tweeted his support to Paul on Thursday, posting 'Best of luck to my brother @oneandonlycp3. Do what's best for You and your family'.

Paul has been the subject of persistent trade rumours in the off-season, with the 25-year-old believed to have lost faith in his team's ability to win an NBA championship and frustrated with its lack of direction.

Central to this frustration is the Hornets' lack of activity in the free agency period. Despite urgings from Paul to recruit aggressively the Hornets have made only one move, re-signing back-up centre Aaron Gray.

At a recent charity golf tournament Paul stated that he would be unhappy playing in New Orleans unless the team demonstrated a commitment to winning immediately.

Since coming within one game of advancing to the 2008 Western Conference finals, the Hornets have gone into decline. Without Paul for more than a third of last season due to injury, the Hornets missed the playoffs entirely, traded centre Tyson Chandler and fired coach Byron Scott (both of whom were close to Paul).

Paul is contracted to the Hornets for two more years, and Weber has stated previously that the Hornets would not consider trading their star player.
