Howard leads Magic past Heat

02/09/2012 07:18:33 AM

Dwight Howard played another starring role as he inspired the Orlando Magic to a 102-89 win over the Miami Heat.

Howard shot 25 points and grabbed 24 rebounds in their NBA clash at the Amway Centre in a superb performance for the Magic, who led at every change.

As well as Howard's heroics, Orlando landed 17 three-pointers on a franchise-record 42 attempts to down the Heat in their first game of a six-game road trip.

Ryan Anderson scored 24 of his 27 points in the first half but a strong second-quarter comeback from Miami saw them trail by just three points at half-time.

The match broke wide open in the third quarter though as the Magic kept the Heat to just 11 points while scoring 24 themselves.

And despite Miami shading the last quarter, Orlando ran out comfortable winners as they condemned last season's NBA runners-up to just their second loss in 10 matches.

Dwyane Wade scored a game-high 33 points for the Heat, while LeBron James - who hit 51 points on the Magic the last time they met in Orlando - was held to 17 points, six rebounds and 10 assists.

Meanwhile, Tony Parker fired 37 points as Southwest Division leaders the San Antonio Spurs defeated Atlantic Division frontrunners the Philadelphia 76ers 100-90.

Parker went 13-of-13 from the free-throw line while Gary Neal chipped in with 18 points from the bench as the Spurs won their sixth match on the trot.

Eastern Conference leaders the Chicago Bulls extended their winning streak to four with a 90-67 thumping of the New Orleans Hornets, despite Derrick Rose managing just six points in his 22 minutes on court.

Carlos Boozer (18 points) led the way for the winners while Chris Kaman had 17 points off the bench for the Hornets.

Jeremy Lin's impressive form continued as he hit 23 points and 10 assists in the New York Knicks' 107-93 win over the Washington Wizards, while Josh Smith (28 points, 12 rebounds) led the Atlanta Hawks to a 97-87 win against the Indiana Pacers.

Ramon Sessions stepped up in the absence of in-form rookie Kyrie Irving with 24 points in the Cleveland Cavaliers' 97-92 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Blake Griffin had 25 points and 15 rebounds for the Clippers.

Reigning champions the Dallas Mavericks snapped a run of three losses with a 105-95 win over the Denver Nuggets, while a 34-point haul from Deron Williams helped the Detroit Pistons to a 99-92 victory over the struggling New Jersey Nets.

The Milwaukee Bucks toppled the Toronto Raptors 105-99 while the Memphis Grizzlies held off a fast-finishing Minnesota Timberwolves outfit to win 85-80 and the Houston Rockets beat the Portland Trail Blazers 103-96.
