The Cairns Taipans have won their top-four clash with the Townsville Crocodiles 85-81 at the Cairns Convention Centre on Friday night.
The Taipans got out to a fast start to lead 22-15 at quarter-time but they were gradually reeled in by the visitors and only enjoyed a one-point advantage (60-59) at the final change.
However, Cairns held firm in the final quarter to win the Queensland derby.
Taipans guard Andrew Warren was the standout with a game-high 24 points, including five three-pointers.
But he enjoyed valuable assistance from the likes of Jamar Wilson (18, six rebounds) and Alex Loughton (16, eight).
Eddie Gill (17) was the pick of the Crocodiles while Luke Schenscher (16) and Todd Blanchfield (13) also contributed.
Meanwhile, the Melbourne Tigers beat the Adelaide 36ers 87-81 at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.
