Bruton calls it a day

Bruton calls it a day

07/22/2010 09:27:18 AM

Dual Olympian C.J. Bruton has announced his retirement from international basketball, effective immediately.

The 34-year-old had hoped to play in the upcoming world championships for the Boomers but some niggling injuries forced him to call it a day.

Bruton made his debut for the national side back in 1998 and went on to represent his country 104 times.

Highlights of his career include playing at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, as well as captaining the Boomers to the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006.

Basketball Australia CEO Larry Sengstock paid tribute to Burton's career and wish him all the best for his future endeavours.

"It was with great sadness that we heard the news that C.J. had decided to end his international basketball career, but we respect his decision and thank him for all he has contributed to the Boomers and Australian basketball," said Sengstock.

"He is a major part of the reason why the Australian men's program has consistently ranked in the top 10 countries in the world and he will be sorely missed."

Bruton will continue to play for the New Zealand Breakers in the NBL this season.
