Russian duo Yuliya Zaripova and Tatyana Chernova have been suspended after both women were found to be in breach of doping rules.

Zaripova won Olympic gold in the 3000m steeplechase at the London Games three years ago, but is set to be stripped of that medal following Friday's announcement.

"Russian Anti-Doping Agency "RUSADA" rendered a decision that made Julia Zaripova ineligible for the anti-doping rule violation (art.2.2 Use of prohibited substance and (or) a prohibited method) for 2 years and 6 months from 25 of July 2013 with the disqualification of the results for the periods: 20 June 2011 - 20 August 2011 and 3 July 2012 - 3 September 2012 upon a decision of the Disciplinary Anti-doping Committee," a statement read.

"The doping rules violations have been detected on the basis of abnormal parameters of the athletes’ hematological profiles within the framework of  of the Biological Passport Program of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)."

Zaripova's backdated two-and-a-half-year ban means she will be eligible for competition again in early 2016.

Chernova, who won heptathlon gold at the 2011 world championships in Daegu, has been banned for two years, after anabolic steroids were found in her system.

The 27-year-old's ban has been backdated from July 22, 2013, meaning she will be able to return to competition in just less than six months' time.
