Yankees shut out Cubs twice

The Yankees posted a 3-0 win over the Cubs in their first clash on Wednesday, with pitcher Masahiro Tanaka throwing eight shutout innings and striking out 10.

Their second encounter produced 10 more hits but one fewer run, as the Yankees scored in the fourth and fifth innings to ease to a 2-0 win and ensure the Cubs of 18 scoreless innings for the day.

The Yankees sit clear top of the AL East with a 9-6 record, after the Toronto Blue Jays' fixture against the Minnesota Twins was postponed due to freezing conditions.

The Baltimore Orioles also had a shutout victory, as they silenced the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 despite both sides earning six hits.

The Boston Red Sox took 14 innings to get past the Chicago White Sox 6-4, snapping a three-match losing streak.

The White Sox remain equal top of the AL Central division with the Detroit Tigers, who fell to a 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

The Indians are within half-a-game of the leading pair.

The Kansas City Royals made it back-to-back wins with a 6-4 triumph over the Houston Astros after 11 innings, while the Texas Rangers also chalked up consecutive victories as they edged the Seattle Mariners 3-2 to move up the West standings.

Chris Iannetta's walk-off homer gave the Los Angeles Angels a 5-4 win over the Oakland Athletics after 12 innings.
