The Yankees had nine consecutive hits against David Price in an 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Price, the 2012 American League (AL) Cy Young Award winner, lasted just two innings after giving up 12 hits.

That would be enough to guide the Yankees to victory as they became the first AL team since the Tigers in 1996 to have nine straight hits in an inning.

The Yankees closed to within six games of AL East leaders the Baltimore Orioles, who suffered a 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Also in the division, the Toronto Blue Jays avoided being swept by the Boston Red Sox thanks to a 5-2 win.

With the Tigers' loss, the Kansas City Royals pulled 2.5 games clear atop the AL Central after a six-run eighth saw them past the Minnesota Twins 6-1.

The Cleveland Indians were beaten 3-2 by the Chicago White Sox.

The Los Angeles Angels maintained their one-game lead atop the AL West, beating the Miami Marlins 6-1.

The Oakland Athletics remain just behind after a 5-4 victory against the Houston Astros thanks to Sam Fuld's two-run homer in the ninth.

The Seattle Mariners, occupying a wildcard spot, were thrashed 12-4 by the Texas Rangers, who had Rougned Odor hit a grand slam.

In the National League (NL) Central, top two the Milwaukee Brewers and St Louis Cardinals both suffered losses.

The Brewers remain 1.5 games clear despite a 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres, who rallied late, and the Cardinals lost 3-1 to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In a clash between the division's bottom two, the Cincinnati Reds edged the Chicago Cubs 7-5.

The NL East-leading Washington Nationals were dealt a third straight loss after going down 8-4 to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Atlanta Braves moved to within 6.5 games of top spot after a 3-2 win over the New York Mets.

The Los Angeles Dodgers maintained their five-game lead atop the NL West after a 3-1 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The San Francisco Giants, second to the Dodgers, beat the Colorado Rockies 4-2.
