Brewers reliever Will Smith has been suspended eight games by Major League Baseball after being ejected from Thursday's game because a foreign substance was found on his arm.

Smith appealed the decision and will remain active until a hearing can be scheduled.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez brought the substance to the attention of the umpires after Smith had thrown four pitches in the seventh inning Thursday night. Crew chief Jim Joyce and the other umpires looked at the shiny, yellowish spot on Smith's right forearm and quickly sent him to the dugout.

The action infuriated the Brewers, who said pitchers all over the league commonly use some sort of substance to help their grip on dry, cool days. Nonetheless, the rule is in place and the ejection was an easy call for the umpires.

Smith said afterward the substance was a blend of sunscreen and rosin and he "forgot" to wipe it off after coming in from the bullpen.
