The American claimed victory in Val d'Isere by 0.19 seconds from Elisabeth Gorgl and Viktoria Rebensburg, moving her top of the downhill standings by 64 points from Tina Maze - who finished seventh.

Vonn's second win of the season left the 30-year-old full of confidence, and just one win away from equalling Annemarie Moser-Proll's record of 62 World Cup wins.

After a year on the sidelines following two knee operations and a fractured shin, Vonn has made an impressive start to the season and she is confident she can return to the top of the sport in 2015.

She said: "I already knew I could win here today. It was for other people to understand that I'm back to where I used to be.

"I'm very much looking forward to the rest of the season and have more opportunities to feel more comfortable with the speed and keep pushing myself.

"It's a celebration for myself and for the team around me. I've waited a long time for this and I'm very happy.

"It feels amazing. I was a bit nervous as I made some mistakes in training. It's tough when you only have one training run and I could have used much more training.

"I skied aggressively today. It was definitely tough as we had a lot more speed. Even though I made that mistake at the bottom I held on and kept fighting, and it paid off."
