Van Gerwen wins all-Dutch battle, Huybrechts stays alive

Michael van Gerwen - Cropped

Premier League Darts leader Michael van Gerwen continued his imposing form, while Kim Huybrechts' slim survival hopes remained alive on Thursday.

Van Gerwen downed fellow Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld 7-2 in Dublin, for his sixth win in eight outings to top the 10-man league with 14 points.

The 2014 PDC World Championship winner missed double-12 for a nine-darter in the second leg of the contest, on his way to a 3-0 lead.

Van Gerwen also won the final three legs of the clash to finish with an average of 108.71, defying Van Barneveld's 104.37 average.

Van Barneveld's loss, along with Adrian Lewis' defeat to Dave Chisnall 7-2, saw Huybrechts' chances of surviving relegation stay alive.

The Belgian lost 7-4 to 16-time world champion Phil Taylor, leaving Huybrechts with just three points in eight matches - and stuck at the foot of the table.

With the bottom two to be relegated following round nine in Manchester on April 2, Huybrechts must win his clash with Stephen Bunting - and hope Lewis (five points) loses to Peter Wright, and Van Barneveld (five) goes down to Gary Anderson.

Lewis sits in the bottom two on leg differential to Van Barneveld, and must overhaul the Dutchman in Manchester if he is to avoid the drop.

Huybrechts (-17) also must overhaul Lewis (-14) and Van Barneveld (-13) on leg differential, if he is to reach the second phase.

Scotsman Anderson downed Bunting 7-4 to join Van Gerwen on six wins, but two points behind the Dutchman in second place.

Chisnall (11 points) is third, after winning seven out of eight legs in his match with Lewis having lost the opener.

Wade (nine) is fourth after his 7-4 win over Wright, which saw both players struggle on their doubles.

The Englishman hit seven of 28 doubles, while Scotsman Wright had a poor conversion rate - winning three legs from 17 double attempts.
