UAB announced some four months ago that it was shutting down its football program, but some Alabama lawmakers haven't given up on trying to bring it back.

Two state representatives are expected to introduce bills designed to return UAB to the field, according to Birmingham TV station WTVM.

“There are five bills and maybe more,” state Sen. Jabo Waggoner said. “I don’t know what kind of movement it has in the House and Senate, but it will get a fair hearing."

At least one of those bills is expected to call for reinstatement of the program, which was shut down last December amid controversy.

UAB, which first fielded a football team in 1991, went 6-6 under first-year head coach Bill Clark but was not invited to play in a bowl game. The program was shut down days after the Blazers' season finale — a 45-24 victory over Southern Miss.
