Turkish Super Lig Review: Balikesirspor record rare win, Carlos bows out at Sivasspor

Last season's second-tier runners-up have endured a difficult campaign in the top flight, with their only previous highlight coming with a 2-0 win over Galatasaray more than three months ago.

However, the league's bottom side bolstered their surival hopes in an entertaining affair, winning 5-3 at the Balikesir Ataturk Stadium to end a 10-game run without a victory.

Ezequiel Scarione gave the visitors an early lead before a goal-packed second half saw Gokhan Unal, Burak Calik, Sercan Yildirim, Ali Ozturk and Mugdat Celik find the target.

The result was a huge boost  for Kemal Ozdes' men and was made all the more valuable by defeats for Sivasspor and Rizespor above them.

Roberto Carlos left his post as Sivasspor coach following their 2-0 loss at home to Istanbul Basaksehir, while Monday's action saw Rizespor beaten 1-0 by Gaziantepspor.

Both sides had men sent off late on in a feisty encounter at the Yeni Rize Sehir Stadium.

Fellow strugglers Eskisehirspor and Karabukspor edged further clear of the drop zone as they shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw, while there were victories for the league's top four.

Leaders Besiktas recorded their sixth Super Lig success in a row with a 3-1 victory over Akhisar Belediyespor.

Cenk Tosun, Jose Sosa and Gokhan Tore were all on target for Slaven Bilic's side, with Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and Basaksehir also taking maximum points.

Defending champions Fener had a late Belozoglu Emre penalty to thank for their 1-0 triumph against Kayseri Erciyesspor, while Hamza Hamzaoglu's strong start at Galatasaray continued at the weekend.

Hamzaoglu is yet to taste defeat in the league with Gala, having twice come from behind to edge Mersin Idmanyurdu 3-2 on Saturday - Umut Bulut's late winner settling the fixture.

Genclerbirligi put five past Konyaspor without reply to boost their hopes of moving into the European places, while fellow continental hopefuls Trabzonspor and Bursaspor shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw.

Basaksehir now enjoy a two-point cushion in the final UEFA Europa League spot with Mustafa Akbas' late goal only enough to gain Trabzonspor a point.
