The veteran tight end is the fifth-highest paid player on the 49ers squad with an annual salary of just over $10million AUD.

He's seen countless players come and go in his nine seasons in the NFL but the 31-year-old sees something 'unique' in his Aussie team-mate and is predicting big things for the Hayne Plan this season.

"When it comes to Jarryd Hayne, he's tough, he's physical, he's relentless, he's passionate and he's just a special and unique player," Davis told reporters.

"His ability to make guys miss and run really well with the football in his hands is amazing'.

"It's amazing to see that and I was talking to him the other day and we had a conversation and I was telling him, 'you're practically a rookie with experience because you play rugby and you kind of got a feel running with the ball and eluding defenders and making people miss'.

"He was like, 'yeah, you're right Vernon, I think you're right. I think you're right (insert terrible attempt at an Aussie accent)'.

"He told me that and it was just a beautiful conversation that we had and I'm excited for him, I'm excited about him and I think he has what it takes to really transform into a unique player."

While there have been reports in Australia that Hayne has already been told he will make the 53-man roster to be named on Sunday (AEDT) – a claim coach Jim Tomsula has flatly denied – Hayne needs all the support he can get from the likes of Davis.

The former Parramatta star has been widely tipped to make the cut primarily as a punt returner by American journalists covering the 49ers.

He has one more chance to impress in the team's final pre-season hit-out against the San Diego Chargers on Friday (AEDT).

The 49ers open their NFL campaign at home against the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, September 15 (AEDT).
