Even with Nick Foles, Rams still plan to draft QB

One would assume trading away a former No. 1 overall pick at quarterback for a Pro Bowl signal-caller would solidify the team's plans for the position, but the Rams still want more insurance under center.

Despite dealing Sam Bradford to the Eagles for Nick Foles earlier in March, Rams coach Jeff Fisher said the franchise plans to use one of its draft picks on another quarterback.

“It’s our intention to draft one,” Fisher said, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “The Nick (Foles) trade has no bearing over what we do in the draft.”

Fisher said while it’s unlikely either James Winston or Marcus Mariota falls to the Rams at No. 10 overall, he isn’t shy about plucking a quarterback from the second tier.

“There’s some outstanding players once you get beyond (Winston and Mariota),” Fisher said. “We’re just starting the process. My understanding, based on our first-wave draft meetings, is that there’s some young quarterbacks that can play.”

You can’t blame the Rams for their interest in extensive depth at the position, considering their luck with Bradford since drafting him with the top pick in 2010.

After Bradford tore his ACL in the preseason last year and backup Shaun Hill went down in Week 1, the Rams went through the majority of the season with the undrafted Austin Davis at the helm.

Not to mention, Foles is fresh off a season-ending collarbone injury.

Fisher said Davis and new signing Case Keenum will battle for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart during the preseason.

However, the addition of a player such as Baylor’s Bryce Petty or UCLA’s Brett Hundley could change those plans for the Rams.
