Hokies RB charged with contributing to delinqency of a minor, suspended

Shai McKenzie

Virginia Tech freshman running back Shai McKenzie has been suspended from the team after being charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, The Roanoke Times reports.

Warrants filed last week detail that McKenzie, 19, and Devin A. Gavion, 18, a Virginia Tech student, were being investigated for carnal knowledge of a child between the ages of 13 and 15. Per the warrant, two girls, ages 15 and 14, met McKenzie and Gavion via social media. The group later met at a home in Christiansburg, Va., to have sexual intercourse between the days of Feb. 11 and Feb. 15. Four condoms were recovered from the residence.

Gavion was charged with one count of felony carnal knowledge and one count of delinquency to a minor and was still being held at Western Virginia Regional Jail. McKenzie was released on a $5,000 bond.

Contributing to the delinquency of a minor is a class 1 misdemeanor and carries with it a potential jail sentence of 12 months and a fine up to $2,500.

"We are aware of the situation and misdemeanor arrest. We take these matters seriously," Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock said in an email to the Times. "Coach (Frank) Beamer has suspended Shai indefinitely from all team related activities as of yesterday. It's in the hands of the proper authorities and we will respect the process."

Prior to tearing his ACL last Sept. 27, McKenzie ran for 269 yards and three touchdowns for the Hokies.
