Severe weather could push SpongeBob SquarePants 400 to Sunday

Rain expected at Kansas Speedway

A chance for severe weather on Saturday may force NASCAR to move the SpongeBob SquarePants 400 to Sunday.

Unlike the steady rain that delayed racing a day at Richmond Motor Speedway two weeks ago, the weather that is expected at Kansas Speedway on Saturday could produce high winds, large hail, and possible tornadoes.

According to weather.com, a severe thunderstorm outbreak is possible in portions of Nebraska and Kansas, including Kansas City where the SpongeBob SquarePants 400 is scheduled to run Saturday night.

According to SB Nation, the odds of racing Saturday are 50-60 percent as the weather that is expected to arrive will be fast-moving.

Rain already caused delays Thursday during the Camping World Truck Series practice, and with more rain expected on Friday, the last race before All-Star weekend could be delayed until Mother's Day.

Qualifying for the SpongeBob SquarePants 400 is scheduled for Friday at 6:45 p.m. ET with Saturday night's race beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET. Should rain cancel qualifying, the starting lineup will be set by practice speeds. If practice is also canceled, then current Sprint Cup points will determine the starting lineup.
