Red Sox outfielder Rusney Castillo could miss more time than originally thought while recovering from a strained left oblique.

The results of an MRI on Wednesday revealed Castillo could be "down for some time," according to manager John Farrell.

Castillo was injured during his third at-bat in a scrimmage Tuesday against Boston College.

Initial word suggested he would only miss one week. But Farrell said recovery would likely take longer, adding that Castillo has never dealt with this type of injury before.

“It wasn’€™t any sort of different kind of swing or odd swing, it was just a pitch that was a little in,” Castillo told reporters through a translator, describing the at-bat, via WEEI. “I took a regular swing on it and felt something there right in the oblique area. That’€™s what it was.”

Farrell said Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr. will see more time rotating in center field during Castillo's abcense.

Boston has significant depth in the outfield with Betts, Bradley, Castillo, Shane Victorino, Allen Craig, Daniel Nava, Brock Holt and newly-signed Hanley Ramirez all vying for starting roles.

Castillo, who debuted for the Red Sox last season, dismissed the notion that the injury will hurt his chances of making the opening day roster.

“I don’€™t think it impacts me in a negative way," he said. "We’€™re doing everything we can to recuperate as quickly as possible. I guess we’€™ll see how it goes.”
