Confusion surrounds Brett Lawrie's apology to Royals' Alcides Escobar

Alcides Escobar

Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar remains upset with Brett Lawrie following a controversial takeout slide that resulted in a knee sprain.

Following the incident, the A's third baseman texted Escobar to apologize, but didn't receive the response he was looking for.

Escobar exited Friday's game against the Athletics after the collision.

Lawrie slid into Escobar's left leg, spikes high, while trying to reach second base ahead of a throw by Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas. Moustakas had fielded a ground ball by Josh Reddick. Lawrie's raised right leg clipped Escobar.

Tensions were high after the incident with Lawrie and Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas jawing at each other, which resulted in the dugouts and bullpens emptying. No punches were thrown and no one was ejected.

Escobar is listed as day-to-day while Lawrie is batting seventh Saturday and will be facing Royals ace Yordano Ventura, who has a history with bad tempers himself. Earlier this season, Ventura exchanged words and glares with Mike Trout after the Angels outfielder celebrated excessively for scoring a run.

UPDATE (6:09 p.m.): Escobar claims that he never received a text from Lawrie, as reported by Athletics beat reporter Jane Lee of MLB.com.

It sounds, though, as if Slusser might have the truest scoop: perhaps, after all this, Lawrie just had the wrong number.

Which means some stranger answered the apology from Lawrie we can now all see, thanks to Slusser.
