The injuries are mounting for the defending American League champions.

The Royals placed closer Greg Holland on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right pectoral strain, the team announced.

Holland, 29, recorded four saves in four scoreless innings for the 8-2 Royals this season. In 2014, the All-Star had 46 saves, a 1.44 ERA, and a 90:20 K:BB ratio in 62 1/3 innings.

Holland is the third Royal to be injured in the recent weeks. Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar exited Friday's game against the Athletics with a left knee sprain following a controversial takeout slide by A's third baseman Brett Lawrie. Outfielder Alex Rios was placed on the disabled list after suffering a broken bone in his left hand when he was hit by a pitch.

With the open roster spot, the Royals recalled right-hander Yohan Pino from Triple-A Omaha. Pino, 31, pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six last Sunday for the Storm Chasers.
