Rio 2016 organisers aim for "affordable" Games

Around half of the 7.5million tickets for the event will be sold for 70 Brazilian reals ($30) or less, the Rio Organising Committee have announced.

However, tickets for the blue-ribbon events are likely to be far less affordable for the majority of the Brazilian population, with high-profile sports such as swimming, basketball and athletics carrying a premium - while being in attendance at the opening ceremony will cost up to 4,600 reals ($1,977).

Due to Brazilian law, students and people over 60 will be entitled to a 50 per cent discount, as was the case at the recent World Cup.

The full ticket sales programme for the Rio 2016 Games is due to be unveiled in November, at which point fans will be able to register their interest via the Games' official website.

The announcement of the competition schedule will be followed by a phased ticket-sales process, set to begin early in 2015.
