The Detroit Red Wings leapfrogged the Tampa Bay Lightning to the top of the Eastern Conference's Atlantic division on Tuesday, while the Islanders continued their dominance in New York.

Luke Glendening scored twice as the Red Wings overcame the Florida Panthers 5-4 to register their sixth win in a row, with the Lightning stumbling to a 4-2 defeat at the Carolina Hurricanes.

Detroit rose to 65 points in the Atlantic standings, moving ahead of previous leaders Tampa Bay (64), while the Montreal Impact (63) defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 to claim third in the division.

Glendening inspired Detroit's match-winning second period as the visitors hit the back of the net four times in a row to build a 5-2 lead over the Panthers.

Florida responded with Nick Bjugstad scoring late in the middle period, before Brad Boyes made it a one-goal game midway through the third, but the Red Wings held on for victory.

Drew Miller, Henrik Zetterberg and Stephen Weiss were Detroit's other scorers.

In North Carolina, the Hurricanes struck twice in the opening seven minutes and then held on to stun Tampa Bay.

The Hurricanes are second-bottom in the Eastern Conference but notched a third straight win thanks to goals from Eric Staal, Nathan Gerbe, Justin Faulk and Jiri Tlusty.

In New York, the Islanders made it three wins from as many games this season against local rivals the New York Rangers.

The Islanders scored the opening four goals of the game, keeping the Rangers scoreless until the final 10 seconds of the contest when Carl Hagelin broke through the home side's defence.

Mikhail Grabovski put the Islanders in front late in the first period before Matt Martin doubled the hosts' lead in the second stanza.

Goals to Ryan Strome and John Tavares followed before Hagelin got on the scoresheet.

The Islanders had beaten the Rangers 6-3 and 3-0 in their previous two meetings this season, while the two Metropolitan teams have two games remaining ahead of the play-offs.

The win took the Islanders to 65 points at the top of the Metropolitan standings, three ahead of the second-placed Pittsburgh Penguins, who trumped the Winnipeg Jets 5-3.

The Western Conference's leading team - the Anaheim Ducks - cruised past the Vancouver Canucks 4-0.

The Philadelphia Flyers needed a shootout to edge past the hapless Arizona Coyotes 4-2, while the woeful Buffalo Sabres lost their 12th game in a row, with the Calgary Flames taking advantage to the tune of 4-1.

The Nashville Predators won 4-3 in overtime against the Colorado Avalanche, the Minnesota Wild prevailed 2-1 at the Edmonton Oilers and the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Washington Capitals 4-3.
