The Red Sox have decided to seek a second opinion after receiving the results of an MRI on catcher Christian Vazquez's right elbow.

Manager John Farrell revealed little about the initial MRI results on Saturday.

"I was not told specifically what's going on there," Farrell said, via ESPN.com. "If, in fact, it involves (the ligament) to what extent, if it is involved, we just know there have been some findings in the MRI. I think before we get too far ahead of ourselves, a second opinion will be had and information compared, but clearly the MRI suggests that there's more information that's going to be had."

Vazquez said he felt discomfort in his throwing elbow March 13, and hasn't played in a game since. The Red Sox thought he was improving with his throwing program, which is why Vazquez waited to have the MRI.

"We're still in a little bit of fact-finding mode right now," Farrell said. "There's no clear-cut plan going forward. Hopefully in the coming days we'll have some more definite information and what is the follow-up plan after that."

The Red Sox manager did confirm that it's doubtful that Vazquez will start the season with the team. In Vazquez's absence, Ryan Hanigan will most likely be the starting catcher for Boston on opening day.
