The April 19 death of Freddie Gray was met on Saturday with a protest thundering down the streets of Baltimore.

Gray, 25, died from a severe injury to his spine a week after his April 12 arrest, when he was subdued by a police officer.

According to the Washington Post, Saturday's protest outside of Camden Yards, the home of the Baltimore Orioles, began peacefully but turned violent as it made its way towards the stadium.

It was the city's largest organised protest since Gray died and, as the march turned onto North Avenue, four lanes of traffic backed up behind them.

Protesters started chanting "Cops say: 'Stand back', we say: 'Fight back'" as they marched the streets holding signs that said "Black Lives Matter".

Multiple police cars were damaged and the protests bled into neighbourhood businesses, with windows or bars and restaurants broken from thrown objects.

All gates to the stadium were eventually closed.

Inside, the Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 after 10 innings.
