The Predators climbed top of the Western Conference's Central division with an emphatic 9-2 drubbing of the Maple Leafs, capitalising on the St Louis Blues' inability to find the net at the Boston Bruins.

Nashville led 4-0 with 20 minutes to play, with Taylor Beck scoring twice and assisting once to set up their healthy advantage - which was doubled five minutes 14 seconds into the final period.

Mike Ribeiro, Filip Forsberg, Calle Jarnkrok and Roman Josi all netted early in the period, before Toronto scored two consolation goals off the sticks of Mike Santorelli and Nazem Kadri.

The Predators would still have the last laugh, Colin Wilson netting in the final three minutes to equal the franchise's highest output in one game.

Nashville sit one point above the Blues, who were humbled 2-0 by the Bruins at TD Garden.

Boston goaltender Tuukka Rask made 33 saves, while Patrice Bergeron and Torey Krug were on target in Massachusetts.

Other sides to earn shutout wins on Tuesday included the Detroit Red Wings over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-0, and the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Montreal Canadiens 4-0.

Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard made 28 saves, while Marc-Andre Fleury kept out 27 shots - five more than the Penguins had - to earn Pittsburgh victory.

The Tampa Bay Lightning missed the chance to move above the Eastern Conference's Atlantic-leading Canadiens, suffering a 5-2 loss to the New York Islanders.

Brian Gionta broke a 1-1 tie in the Buffalo Sabres' 4-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks, and went on to bag two goals and an assist in an influential cameo.

Michael Frolik scored the sealing goal, and had an assist in another, as the Winnipeg Jets outclassed the New Jersey Devils 3-1,  Eric Staal scored twice in the third period to see the Carolina Hurricanes past the Dallas Stars 6-4, the Calgary Flames won after a shoot-out against the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 and Eric Fehr's overtime goal saw the Washington Capitals past the Arizona Coyotes 2-1.

The Los Angeles Kings downed the Florida Panthers 5-2.
